Preparing for the NG Send Off

Ms. Drury here is preparing banners and posters for our Friday send-off of the local National Guard unit. It has been called up to go over seas again. We plan to send them off with as much SLE spirit as possible. I had to crop the picture because students were in the original frame, and we don't have written permission for them to be on the web. However, they'll be outside in full force Friday when the troops come by the school.

Square County Toastmasters Needs Home

Funding for our staff to continue our communication and leadership development through the Toastmasters program is ending this school year, so we are seeking interested community clubs, businesses, or individuals to continue with the "Square County Toastmasters" club. This is a great time to broaden the impact of this world renowned training to the Leake County community. Anyone interested should call me at the school, or you can email me.

The May issue of the Toastmaster magazine has ?"Do You Blog?" "What's New With Web 2.0?" and "Toastmasters in the Social Networks" are excellent sources of current trends and information of how these technologies are improving our abilities to get things done.

SLE Students Performed Beautifully

Mrs. Cunn's students from SLE and CJHS, and a couple of other places, presented their piano recital Saturday at SLHS. Eveyone did a wonderful job, and I could see some real improvement in the students who performed last year! We thank Mrs. Mabry for hosting the event at her school, and we thank the parents for supporting their children as they learn to express themselves through music.

If music training is important to you, please call or send a letter to Mr. Ladner and the school board in his care telling them how much you apprecieate and support Mrs. Cunn and her piano lessons. RMEMBER: If you have any pictures you'd like for me to use in our newsletter, please email a copy to me. Thanks, JH.

Must See Reading on the Web

Today I saw a show from BookTV of an interview with Malcom Gladwell where he was discussing his new book, "Outliers." It was so interesting, I visited his web page where I found links to many newspaper and magazine articles he has written. Teachers and administrators alike will want to read especially the one where he compares hiring NFL quarterbacks and school teachers.

Working on a Website

I'm working on a website. I received a great link to a education-related website that allows one to start a web page free of charge. Upgrades are available for a fee, but please forgive me while my Scottish soul holds me to the free service for now.

You can see what I've done so far by visiting my website. Just click here. I'll add more as time goes on. But you can start some conversation by leaving a comment, if you wish.

Finishing Strong

We’re coming down to the last few weeks of the school year, and all, students and teachers, are working hard to finish strong!

Clayton Tells Story on Radio

As I was driving home this afternoon, I heard Mrs. Clayton reading her story on Mississippi Public Broadcasting Radio as part of the Rural Voices Radio portion of their program. She sounded great! We’ll have more SLE teachers and students to read their stories over the coming weeks and months. You’ll just have to listen in to catch them.

Out of this World Time

I had a great time driving the 23 students who earned a trip to the Stennis Space Center this week. I’ll post some pictures of our trip soon.

Math Efforts Adding Up

Ms Landrum reported today that she is seeing some improvement in her students’ math results. Thanks to the teachers and students who are focusing their efforts. We will be giving practice MCT2 tests in reading and language next Tuesday and Wednesday to gauge how well prepared our students are.

Kids Get Coached

Finally, thanks goes to Maurice Bowie, the head basketball coach at East Central Community College as well as the brother of Mrs. Tameka Weathers, for giving a pep talk to our fifth and sixth graders today. Even the teacher and I were inspired!

Have a Happy Easter, and keep in touch with your child’s teacher.
