I hope you have already received a phone call from Mr. Ladner announcing that we will have NO SCHOOL today. If not, please note that school has been canceled for today, February 10, 2011.


Listen for a phone call this evening from Mr. Ladner updating you on school plans for Friday. We will be watching the weather and the road conditions today. If you know of any dangerous road conditions, please email me.

Gifted Class Quiz Bowl Teams

Congratulations to these students for making the Quiz Bowl team. The annual Quiz Bowl competition will be on January 28,2011, at the Clarke- Veneble Baptist Church, in Decatur,MS.

Guided Reading Training

Deborah Simpson, third from left, conducts training with first and second grade teachers in guided reading during our recent staff development. SLE teachers are implementing the reading strategies to improve students' reading skills. Our next PTO meeting will feature strategies parents can implement at home to help their children learn to read.

SLHS Homcoming 2010

Here are just a few picture from our 2010 Homecoming Parade. The weather was great, and the crowd was happy. The Wildcats put a hurttin' on the Bulldogs, too!

I think it was Mrs. Murrell's idea to include the Mardi Gras hats, masks and beads.

Even Mrs. Bloodsaw enjoyed helping prepare the lineup for the parade.

 The Big Blue Pride of SLHS led off the parade this year.

 The Walnut Grove Fire Truck made plenty of noise as we went around town.

 Wow! What a great turnout downtown for the parade. I think they were having a good time, too.

Do You Want It?
There has been much in the news lately about schools doing a poor job. Well, I’m happy to report to you that we have many students that scored advanced on state tests. How do you explain why some students score advanced and some score minimal or basic while in the same room, with the same teacher, and with the same curriculum? My experience has been that often the difference is the parent that works with their child at home. This usually means the parents also know how to work with the school to help their child succeed. It is never too late to begin a true partnership with the school to help your child to succeed. But you have to want it! - Principal

• Please note that this Wednesday, October 6 we will dismiss school at 3 p.m.
• School will be dismissed Friday, October 8 at 1 p.m.
• There will be no school Monday, October 18.

SLE Report Card Shows Student Progress
The No Child Left Behind school report card is being sent home today. Please notice that SLE students made progress on its May 2010 MCT2. We moved from “Failing” to “At Risk of Failing.” We moved our QDI from 88 to 100. We met the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for NCLB, but we did not meet the growth status for the state. In short, SLE is improving its performance on the MCT2. If you have any questions after reading through the school’s report card, please contact the principal. We will discuss this briefly at our PTO meeting October 12, also.

Students to Take 9 Weeks Tests October 5-7
Please take the following steps to prepare your child for tests:
• Help your child study by providing a schedule of time to study.
• Talk with your child’s teacher about what will be on the tests.
• Talk to your child about what an education will mean for her.

If You Get On the Bus, Follow Rules for Safety
Have you talked with your child about riding the school bus safely and with respect towards the others? Rules and the driver are there for your child’s safety. Yet, students endanger everyone on the bus when they don’t follow basic bus rules. Children should:
• Stay in their seats while the bus is in motion
• Keep their hands and feet to themselves
• Talk in their “little” voice
Please encourage your child to follow these simple rules. Get to know your child’s driver, too.

Parent Volunteers Help 5th Grade Raise Funds
Thanks go to Peggy and Mark Roberson, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bridges, and Kim McDonald for helping with the recent fund raiser to send 5th graders on their Birmingham field trip!

Harris Makes Perfect Score On Accelerated Reader
Congratulations to Keyonna Harris. She scored 100 on all her AR tests this period!

Kids Earn Cool Pops

Kaley Shirley and Chasiti Ricks in Mrs. Summers-Jones' class enjoy cool pops they earned for good behavior during the month of August. The school recognizes students for good behavior each month with something a little special. Way to go girls!

Thursday Club Gift

The Walnut Grove Thursday Club recently donated school supplies for need students. This is one of their club projects for this school year. The club has been active in years past by providing help during state testing, reading to classes, coordinating art activities, and more. Pictured above are Shelton Windom and Tommie Rosenbaum.
