Do You Want It?
There has been much in the news lately about schools doing a poor job. Well, I’m happy to report to you that we have many students that scored advanced on state tests. How do you explain why some students score advanced and some score minimal or basic while in the same room, with the same teacher, and with the same curriculum? My experience has been that often the difference is the parent that works with their child at home. This usually means the parents also know how to work with the school to help their child succeed. It is never too late to begin a true partnership with the school to help your child to succeed. But you have to want it! - Principal

• School will be dismissed Friday, October 8 at 1 p.m.

SLE Report Card Shows Student Progress
The No Child Left Behind school report card is being sent home today. Please notice that SLE students made progress on its May 2010 MCT2. We moved from “Failing” to “At Risk of Failing.” We moved our QDI from 88 to 100. We met the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for NCLB, but we did not meet the growth status for the state. In short, SLE is improving its performance on the MCT2. If you have any questions after reading through the school’s report card, please contact the principal. We will discuss this briefly at our PTO meeting October 12, also.
Students to Take 9 Weeks Tests October 5-7
Please take the following steps to prepare your child for tests:
• Help your child study by providing a schedule of time to study.
• Talk with your child’s teacher about what will be on the tests.
• Talk to your child about what an education will mean for her.
If You Get On the Bus, Follow Rules for Safety
Have you talked with your child about riding the school bus safely and with respect towards the others? Rules and the driver are there for your child’s safety. Yet, students endanger everyone on the bus when they don’t follow basic bus rules. Children should:
• Stay in their seats while the bus is in motion
• Keep their hands and feet to themselves
• Talk in their “little” voice
Please encourage your child to follow these simple rules. Get to know your child’s driver, too.
Parent Volunteers Help 5th Grade Raise Funds
Thanks go to Peggy and Mark Roberson, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bridges, and Kim McDonald for helping with the recent fund raiser to send 5th graders on their Birmingham field trip!

All parents are urged to attend and take part in your child’s school. Topics to be discussed will include:
• ways parents can volunteer;
• student progress after the first month of school;
• Federal Programs Committee’s plans for the year;
• PTO fundraisers and projects; and
• Parents for Public School workshop September 21.
Dress Code
Please review the Student/Parent Handbook concerning the dress code. Students will want to wear coats and jackets as the fall weather gets cooler. Page 13 in the handbook outlines the district and school policy concerning coats and jackets, and this policy is in effect now. Also note that on that same page under “Bottoms” there are directions concerning pants and shorts. Pants and shorts with large outside pockets are not allowed. If you have any questions, contact the principal.
Car Riders
New parents to our school may not know this, but we have a lot more students coming to school this year by car. This has created an unexpected problem with traffic in the mornings and the afternoons. We are very concerned about the safety of students who are dropped off and picked up in the front of the school. You have noticed we have been working to direct traffic to keep traffic manageable and children safe. We thank you for your cooperation. Please note that we will be making more changes in the coming weeks as we receive new signs to help direct drivers.
For the time being, we ask that you do the following for us:
• Slow down! – The speed limit in our school zone is 25 miles per hour. We ask that you drop it down to 15 mph in front of the school during school hours.
• Drop off/Pick up quickly – Have students ready to get out of cars quickly so you can clear the area quickly. The fewer the cars, the greater the safety. The traffic staff cannot easily watch all students when there are many cars in the loading zone at the same time.
• Afternoon pick up - We are working to get the car riders out at 10 minutes before the bell in the afternoon. Please try to be at the school and in line at that time. Please do not block the drive way where buses park.
• No pick up between 2:30-and 2:50 – This is to help us manage traffic. We have to pull staff to cover the traffic in the mornings and the afternoons, so we try to maximize our time and safety by asking parents NOT to pick up students between these times.
• Late changes – If you need for your child to make changes in how they are to ride home (e.g. change buses, ride the bus instead of the car), we need a written note from you with those instructions. Instructions over the phone are not allowed because it is too easy for us to make a mistake and put your child on the wrong bus or in the wrong car. Only in emergency situations can we take instructions over the phone.
Thank you, parents, for helping us with these matters. We also thank the parents who are already volunteering for various jobs at SLE. We really appreciate you! If we can help you in any way, please call us at 253-2324. – Jimmy Henderson, Principal
