A List We Do Not Want To Appear On
The Clarion-Ledger ran an interesting article in the May 2 edition of the paper. In the article "School Opposed to Possible Mergers," the paper listed the 18 school districts that could improve by merging with higher-performing districts. The districts are:

Benoit
Coahoma County
Coffeeville
Drew
East Jasper
Hazlehurst
Hollandale
Indianola
Jefferson Davis County
Kemper County
Montgomery County
North Panola

Oktibbeha County

What the article did not report was what criteria did the group that created this list use to select these districts. At first glance, these districts have been struggling for years to meet accreditation standards and test score goals. We need to be vigilant at South Leake and in all Leake County schools so that we do not see our names on this list in the future.

Parents Campaign Reports MAEP Allocations
Leake County School District MAEP Allocations
You can now find posted on the Mississippi Parents Campaign website (http://www.msparentscampaign.org/) the local school district allocations of MAEP funding that was appropriated for the coming year in House Bills 1622 and 1059. Please bear in mind that the funding appropriated in HB1059 is contingent upon the passage of federal legislation to extend the states' reduced match for Medicaid. Schools will receive at least the level of funding appropriated in HB1622. You will note that the spreadsheet that they have posted, which was created by the Mississippi Department of Education, is in draft form. This is due to the fact that Governor Barbour has not yet received and signed the appropriations bills. Though he is expected to approve them, the budgets are not final until he does so.

FY 2011 MAEP ALLOCATION - HB 1622 FUNDING LEVEL - $14,425,359

Plan to Attend May 4th Forum
Please plan to attend the joint SLE and SLHS meeting May 4 at 6 p.m. We will meet at the SLHS library to talk about some big changes planned at South Leake for next year. Help us by having this mentioned in your church this weekend. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT MEETING!
It has been a strange and challenging week, to say the least. We can tell that spring fever is here, and it is all we can do to stay focused on our school work. We need parents' help these last few days by encouraging children to do there best in school. Don't quit! What we do these last three weeks can make all the difference.
If your child is scoring anything less than an 85 in any subject, I encourage you to meet with your child's teacher immediately to discuss what can be done. Today, anything less than a score of 85 in the classroom translates to "below proficient" on the state tests. So, please get into the game, and let us work together to ensure our students are earning a great education. Contact me, if I can be of any help.

South Leake Elementary School and South Leake High School are working together to accomplish great things! The first collaborative effort will be to host the School Transformation Community Forum Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. in the South Leake High School library. During this informational session the Leake County School District Administrative Personnel will explain and discuss the school transformation process. All parents, community members, and other interested parties are strongly encouraged to attend. For more information, please contact Dr. Shirley H. Nichols, Assistant Superintendent of Education, at 601-267-4579.
Students to Take MCT2 Tests
Students in grades 3 through 8 will take the all-important MCT2 assessments May 11, 12, and 13. Please make certain that your child does his or her best by doing the following:
• Make sure students are at school by 7:40 a.m. so they can have breakfast and prepare for the tests;
• Make sure students get plenty of sleep;
• Bring two number 2 pencils daily;
• And talk about the importance of doing his or her best!
Awards Day(s) Programs Scheduled
Please plan to attend your child’s awards day program(s).
May 18 – Grades 1-5 at 12:30 p.m.
May 18 – Kindergarten at 9 a.m.
May 20 – 6th Grade at 7 p.m.
